My Child ID FAQs

How is the new My Child ID™ different from the Child ID Kit 1.0?

The My Child ID™ has been completely redesigned to be law enforcement-friendly by paralleling NCIC suspect, victim and vehicle descriptors for ease of data transfer when time is critical. Storage for more children, more pictures and more information has been greatly expanded. Aesthetically the device has been changed. The My Child ID™ is an evolution from a standard USB drive to a USB drive housed in the My Child ID™, a palm-sized device with a 1.4” LCD screen to display both data and photos.

The My Child ID™ features online back-up, software updates and Private Alerting, and the My Child ID™ is the only child identification device that is multi-platform compatible, working with Windows, Mac and Linux operation systems.

Additionally, My Child ID™ is the only child identification device that integrates with the Law Enforcement Alerting Portal, or L.E.A.P., which can potentially reduce response times from hours to minutes as information can be instantly retrieved and disseminated in the event of an emergency.

What is Private Alerting?

Private Alerting allows you to send E-mail or text messages to all the contacts stored on your My Child ID™. Using the same technology used by law enforcement agencies that employ the AmberAlert.com L.E.A.P. to issue AMBER Alerts, you can login and issue an alert to your contact list when you register your My Child ID™.

Do I have to pay for Private Alerting, software updates or online back-up of my information?

The first year of online back-up and Private Alerting is included with your purchase. If you decide to keep a back-up copy of your information online, you will be prompted 90 days, 60 days, 30 days and 10 days before your account expires, to renew your account. There will be an annual charge of $9.99 to store and back-up your information online following the first free year of service.

Software updates for the version of software on your My Child ID™ are at no cost for the life of your device. Each time you connect the My Child ID™ to your computer you will be prompted to download updates. The AmberAlert.com Team is continually upgrading our software and we recommend you always select to download updated versions of the current version of your software. Check the Settings menu on the My Child ID™ to see what version of the software you have.

Is the My Child ID™ secure?

Yes. The device is password protected and encrypted. There are no “back doors,” or master access.

In the event that the My Child ID™ is misplaced, can the information be accessed by anyone other than the owner?

No. Without the password, no one can access the information. In fact, 10 failed attempts to login will result in deletion of the data. If you register you account online, you will have the ability to retrieve your password in the event you forget it. However, if your device is not register and you forget your password, there is no way to retrieve it; you will have to re-enter all the data on your My Child ID™.

The software My Child ID™ was designed using SHA 1, an encryption format designed by the National Security Agency (NSA).

Is the online backup secure?

Yes. The AmberAlert.com online back-up is designed in compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPPA) guidelines to ensure the privacy and security of your information.

Is there an option for parents/guardians who do not want to carry any manner of device with them?

Not at this time. The reason My Child ID™ was designed with the LCD screen and the elephant character is so parents / guardians will never forget to carry it with them. In order to access the information, you must have the device. While information is backed-up online, it is encrypted and can only be accessed by using the My Child ID™ and password.

If you lose your My Child ID™ and the information is backed up online, you can restore the information to a new My Child ID™.

Will there be software updates available?

Yes. As we will continually improve the software, every time the device is plugged in, you will have the option to download the most updated version of the software.
